Pamela from Paths of Illumination and Randy (SpiritWorks of Virginia) worked together to create an 80' 11-circuit medieval (Chartres) pattern labyrinth in the circular drive at Unity Church of Charlottesville.
After discussing the project at length with Rev Patricia Lansky, the decision to fully utilize the space with 3'-wide paths.
As Unity Church of Charlottesville wanted more than just a temporary labyrinth and was not ready to undertake such a major initiative as a permanent fixture (at this stage), a compromise was initiated, whereby the labyrinth was laid out using 3/8" polystyrene rope held in place by 6" (60D) galvanized nails. The nails were set through the rope, which was spliced, instead of using knots.
Working through the day, the labyrinth took more than 20 total hours to complete, using 1850' of yellow polystyrene, and 50 pounds of 60D galvanized spikes.
The "Shalom Labyrinth" is open to the public, and efforts are underway to make it a permanent fixture in the Charlottesville community.
